Dermaplaning Vs Microdermabrasion

An Exfoliation Facial will leave your skin noticeably smoother and softer, removing dull, dead skin and revealing a layer of fresh, healthy skin. There are two types of exfoliation – Chemical and Manual. Chemical exfoliation involves using specific ingredients to target skin concerns. Manual Exfoliation is what we’re focusing on today, specifically, two treatments – Dermaplaning and Microdermabrasion. Both accomplish similar results – leaving the skin texture silky smooth and brightening any discoloration. So which treatment is right for you?

Dermaplaning uses a surgical scalpel to scrape away dead skin cells, removing fine hair and peach fuzz in the process. The main benefits of dermaplaning are the exfoliation, increased product penetration, and the improvement of skin tone and texture. The hair removal is just a bonus! Dermaplaning is painless, non-invasive, and requires no downtime. Dermaplaning is great before a photoshoot or event. Dermaplaning cannot safely remove men’s facial hair because it is a different type of hair (courser and thicker).

Dermaplaning removes dead skin and hair

Dermaplaning is not the same as shaving your face. When done professionally, the blade is angled to cut hairs into a fine taper. When shaving, hairs come back blunt, which is why they feel thicker. Over the counter “dermaplaning tools” are not the same quality either. At-home “dermaplaning tools” are built with a plastic guard, which creates microtears every time it scrapes across. Professional Dermaplaning uses a sterile, surgical grade steel blade and does not cut the skin.

Dirt, dead skin, and oil from Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion uses a machine and suction to remove dead skin, dirt, and oil trapped in pores. The tip of the microdermabrasion wand is like fine sandpaper – first we go over with a courser grit to target skin texture, then we go over with a finer grit to polish and smooth the skin. Microdermabrasion is a great deep clean, especially for combination and oily skin. This treatment is also good for dry skin, removing flaky dead skin. Microdermabrasion is an excellent preventative treatment – my most popular monthly facial.

Microdermabrasion uses a machine/suction

I personally prefer Microdermabrasion because of the deep clean. I have combination skin, so I’m always a little oiler along my nose and chin. I love how clean my pores feel afterwards! I’ve also seen great results improving sun damage / hyperpigmentation, when paired with pigment blocking homecare. For dramatic results, alternate or pair with a chemical peel. If you’re someone that wears makeup every day, you might prefer Dermaplaning. By removing the hair, Dermaplaning creates a blank canvas for product and makeup application.

The risks of Dermaplaning and Microdermabrasion are minimal. Since we are removing that top layer of dead skin, your skin is more vulnerable to sun damage after an exfoliation treatment. Sun Protection is key to maintain the results of your treatment. You will also want to avoid active products and exfoliation for a week after – including AHA’s, BHA’s, and retinoids. Basically, you want to be really gentle on your skin and avoid the sun for a week after.

Most individuals can receive Exfoliation Facials safely. Please set up a complimentary consultation if you’re considering Dermaplaning or Microdermabrasion. If you’re experiencing active acne or are pregnant, you’ll want to avoid these treatments, but we can talk about other options.
